Karis at Camp CUMCITO
Each summer since 1937, City Union Mission has been taking children from low-income families in the Kansas City area to Warsaw, Mo for a fun-filled week of camp. Camp CUMCITO, City Union Mission’s Camp in the Ozarks, balances providing a traditional camp atmosphere of swimming, hiking, crafts, and cookouts, with opportunities for Bible teaching, drama, songs, and gospel-centered teachable moments. Counselors and camp staff surround the children with love and consistent discipline, teaching them about Jesus and how to live a new life for Him. This year, Karis Church is partnering with them to give Columbia children in similar circumstances the opportunity for a changed life.
Our week of camp will be June 29 – July 5, focusing on PreTeens, 10-12 years old, in Big Camp and in Tot Lot with children 4-6 years old. There are 2 ways you can partner with us – at camp and at home.
At camp
If you can commit to the full week and join us at camp, there are a number of positions to choose ranging from lots of camper contact, such as counselor, assistant counselor, or big sibling; moderate levels of camper interaction (recreation, chapel, or craft staff); to low amounts of camper contact (kitchen staff, janitor, assistant janitor, canteen/laundry). There’s also the need for nurses registered in the state of Missouri, and a nurse’s assistant to help with bandages or scraped knees.
If you can’t commit to the full week, volunteers are also welcome to help at the Thursday night Tot Lot carnival or the Friday night Big Camp carnival. On the Saturday after camp, an MC could volunteer as a group to clean the camp in preparation for the next group of campers the following week.
At home
We will need a team of people in Columbia registering campers for the Saturday health screening, loading campers and their luggage on the bus on Monday, riding along as a bus monitor, and helping match campers back up with luggage and family at the end of the week.
