Game Review: Quarriors

Recently Hadley and I have been enjoying the game Quarriors by WizKids Games. WizKids calls this a "dice building" game. It takes the deck-building mechanic of games like Dominion, which I haven't played (but have heard good things about), and converts it to dice.

Quarriors actually comes with 130 custom dice, and they're quite impressive. The game's artwork is fun; manga-ish might describe it best. Quarriors plays quite well, also. Each player begins with basic dice that have to be spent to obtain better, more powerful dice. The dice in one player's bag battles against those in another's during each round of play. Those creatures (dice) that survive gain glory points. The game at first glance seemed quite complicated; the manual isn't the best. However, after watching a few online videos, we learned the rules, which are actually quite easy.

Quarriors is well-suited for all ages. Because the game begins by drawing different cards that utilize different dice for each play of the game, replay-ability is high. In addition, there are already two expansions available that add in more cards and dice. We highly recommend this game. I was skeptical on first seeing it in the local game store. It looked a bit juvenile. I'm really glad we gave it a try.
