Karis Blog: Chris Martin on Passion
Coldplay was recently featured on 60 Minutes. During the interview, lead singer Chris Martin said this:
"We rely more on enthusiasm more than skill... whatever you do, do it enthusiastically and people will like it more. I can't dance like Usher, I can't sing like Beyonce, I can't write songs like Elton John. But we can do the best we can with what we've got. So that's what we do, we just go for it."
I've been pondering this since in relation to my preaching. Am I preaching with passion? Perhaps my favorite preacher, John Piper, wouldn't do well in a lot of seminary preaching classes. His skills aren't that great, honestly. Obviously, he is a gifted scholar. But his preaching would get torn up by a lot of critics. But what he has, that is so essential, is passion. It's my prayer that God would fill me by His grace with much enthusiasm. The gospel deserves nothing less. And the call of preaching requires it.
