What is a Missional Community?

At Karis, our small groups ministry takes the form of Missional Communities, also known as “MCs”. An MC is a family of disciples that share their lives with one another and make new disciples in the everyday rhythms of life. While MCs regularly discuss Scripture, the Gospel and what Jesus is doing in their lives, they are more than a traditional midweek Bible study group. When MCs gather, what readers see in Acts 2:42 takes place: fellowship, devotion to the Scriptures, prayer, and sharing a meal together. These groups meet in the homes of our members all across our city.

Beyond the regular or more structured meetings, MC members invest in one another’s lives in all sorts of ways: through BBQs, game nights, studying together, going to each other’s kids’ games and rehearsals, working in the garage, you name it! Discipleship happens when we do the normal things of life with others who are themselves growing, and challenging us, to be more like Jesus.

MCs are also designed to have a missional focus, where we meet our neighbors and serve our community so that we can show and tell them the good news about Jesus. This can be as simple as inviting the people who live on our street to join us for dinner when the group eats together. It may also look like finding a regular time and place to serve or take part in community life. Being on mission in the normal rhythms of life might also include being a regular at the local stores and shops nearest to us. Anything where we can show others who Jesus is!
