Adore the Holy One: week two of Advent

"Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, for He has visited and redeemed His people and has raised up a horn of salvation for us in the house of His servant David, as He spoke by the mouth of His holy prophets from of old, that we should be saved from our enemies and from the hand of all who hate us; to show the mercy promised to our fathers and to remember His holy covenant, the oath that He swore to our father Abraham, to grant us that we, being delivered from the hand of our enemies, might serve Him without fear, in holiness and righteousness before Him all our days. And you, child, will be called the prophet of the Most High; for you will go before the Lord to prepare his ways," Luke 1:68-76

As Zechariah, in his prayer, above, gave the glory to God, so we should come before Him, to adore Him.

"Therefore, preparing your minds for action, and being sober-minded, set your hope fully on the grace that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ. As obedient children, do not be conformed to the passions of your former ignorance, but as He who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, since it is written, 'You shall be holy, for I am holy.'" 1 Peter 1:13-16

We are called to be holy, yet so often we act as disobedient children. Wherever you are as you read this, stop and confess to God your unholiness.

Our God is holy.

This means there is no one like Him. Nothing in the universe – no one in all of creation can be compared to Him.

There is no analogy for Him which does not fall dreadfully short. Be stunned by the fact that our God simply is. He was not created and has existed eternally. Who is like Him?

He is righteous and everything good. He cannot stand that which is evil. God cannot be in the presence of evil, and evil man cannot see God and live. This is what makes the incarnation so remarkable. Jesus was God and he dwelt among men. The baby in the manger was the Holy One of Israel, the King of the universe.

"Let all mortal flesh keep silence,
And with fear and trembling stand;
Ponder nothing earthly-minded
For with blessing in His hand,
Christ our God to earth descendeth
Our full homage to demand."
