Recommended: Real Marriage by Mark Driscoll
I recently finished Mark Driscoll's book, Real Marriage. I found the book to be a very applicable, helpful read. Some quick thoughts:
- There has been controversy over the chapter entitled, "Can We ________?" However, many Christians are in denial over the fact that people in our culture are asking these questions and certainly many people in our churches.
- The final chapter, "Reverse Engineering Your Life and Marriage," is excellent. It provides lots of questions designed to get couples to work backwards from the type of marriage they'd love to have. Most people don't realize: if we want to have a different type of marriage, we have to make different choices in the here and now.
- The chapter entitled, "The Porn Path," is excellent and should be read by all men, even singles. The book deals with sex in a way that's perhaps too honest for some people, but I think Driscoll deals with the subject in a respectful, biblical manner.
- I won't soon forget Driscoll's helpful metaphor for understanding our relationships as husband and wife: side-to-side, back-to-back, and face-to-face. Side-to-side speaks of couples working toward a goal together. This might involve raising children or starting a business. This can be good or idolatrous. When the project or goal is removed (the kids head off to college, for example), what binds you together after that? Back-to-back refers to hostility in a marriage. Conflict must be dealt with and worked through immediately and fully. Face-to-face is looking at each other in the eyes, actually communicating with one another, and building a true friendship.
Real Marriage isn't my favorite book on marriage. There are so many great ones out there. In Karis Church, we use Love that Lasts by the Ricuccis and This Momentary Marriage by Piper for our premarital counseling. I also love Tripp's What Did You Expect? I'm looking forward to soon reading Keller's The Meaning of Marriage. However, Driscoll's book is a good one. I love and respect Mark so much. He has been very kind to me personally. Karis Church is proudly a part of Acts 29. I think Mark and Grace's story and advice will help many.
